Quarrying Industry calls for action on 'unregistered' quarries around New Zealand

Further deaths at New Zealand quarries are likely if hundreds of sites remain unregistered, the industry's health and safety council says.

Four people were killed at quarry or small mine sites around the country in 2015, including three in the South Island. Two fatalities occurred at unregistered quarry sites.

MinEx, the national health and safety council for New Zealand's mining and quarry sector, said if quarries were not registered with WorkSafe New Zealand there was no assurance operators and employees were appropriately trained for the risks they faced.
